Russell Kirk

From what I understand, I'm going to a baptism reception tomorrow with this guy's wife. Small world...

In any case, I'm largely unfamiliar with his work, but it comes highly recommended from a friend (Max Goss, former editor of the Right Reason blog, where Francis Beckwith - at that time the president of the Evangelical Theological Society - announced his reversion to the Catholic faith).

Based in my experience with Max, I'm really looking forward to these lectures.

Care for the Sick and Dying

Face it -- you and your loved ones are going to die someday. Maybe that day will be soon, maybe not. Either way, you're best served by being prepared to die NOW. In particular, it's critical that your wills, powers of attorney, etc., be made before you need them -- you can always change them later, but you can never make them posthumously.

Don't forget, you can make it a part of your will that the beneficiaries have masses said for your soul. If it turns out that you don't need them (i.e., you're in heaven with the Church Triumphant rather than the Church Suffering), through God's grace they will still be efficacious for your holy brothers and sisters in in Purgatory.

Do yourself a favor and listen to this ten part series so you'll know (1) how best to care for those you love and (2) how best to help those who love you care for you. The (eternal) life you save may be your own.

Planned Barrenhood

From Pro-Life Pulse:

American Life League/Rock for Life are making good use of YouTube.

They've just uploaded a video expose of, It's Perfectly Normal, a book supposedly for kids ages 9-12 that has been banned from at least one prison as pornographic.

News to me, the book lists the anus as a sex organ, certainly not its original or ongoing purpose.

And the decent among us have united. It's Perfectly Normal topped the American Library Association's list of "most frequently challenged books of 2005" for "homosexuality, nudity, sex education, religious viewpoint, abortion and being unsuited to age group," and ranked #15 in ALA's list of "100 most frequently challenged books 1990-2000" - even though it was published more than halfway through the decade, in 1996.

Of course, Planned Parenthood endorses It's Perfectly Normal. Good for business. The book promotes abortion, of course.

You've got to be friggin' kidding me...

Theosis / Divinization - Eastern Theology

This looks like a treat -- it's not often you'll find a lecture on Divinization. It's not that Catholics aren't supposed to believe it. Indeed, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states:

460 The Word became flesh to make us "partakers of the divine nature":"For this is why the Word became man, and the Son of God became the Son of man: so that man, by entering into communion with the Word and thus receiving divine sonship, might become a son of God." "For the Son of God became man so that we might become God." "The only-begotten Son of God, wanting to make us sharers in his divinity, assumed our nature, so that he, made man, might make men gods."
Divinization is central to our theology, but unfortunately we in the west (i.e., Latin Rite Catholics) haven't really explored the idea as much as our Eastern brothers despite this being a significant facet of our Tradition.

And no...we're not Mormons...it means something completely different....

All of that is to say this -- I'm really looking forward to this lecture. I hope you listen, too!

AUDIO:

A discussion of the central mystery of the early church’s theology: the divinization of the human person in the light of the Word made flesh.

UPDATE:
A reader reminds me that I didn't say who gave the talk! The speaker is Phil Krill, the DRE of St. Isadore's Catholic Church in MI, and while his biography has proven somewhat difficult to find online, I listened to the talk and it's rather good and in line with everything else I have read on the subject. Please check it out.

Roy Shoeman - Salvation is from the Jews

Roy Schoeman, was born in a suburb of New York City of "Conservative" Jewish parents who had fled Nazi Germany. His Jewish education and formation was received under some of the most prominent Rabbis in contemporary American Jewry, including Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg, probably the foremost Conservative Rabbi in the U.S. and his hometown Rabbi growing up; Rabbi Arthur Green, later the head of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College who was his religion teacher and mentor during high school and early college; and Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, a prominent Hasidic Rabbi with whom he lived in Israel for several months.

His secular education included a B.Sc. from M.I.T. and an M.B.A. magna cum laude from Harvard Business School. Midway through a career of teaching and consulting (he had been appointed to the faculty of the Harvard Business School) he experienced an unexpected and instantaneous conversion to Christianity which led to a dramatic refocus of his activities. Since then he has pursued theological studies at several seminaries, helped produce and host a Catholic Television talk show, and edited and written for several Catholic books and reviews. Salvation is from the Jews is his first full-length book.

One account of his conversion, as it originally appeared in Christ to the World, follows. Another version which appeared in the book Marian Shrines of France can be found by clicking here.

The various fields of study certainly seem to indicate that naturalistic evolution is more probable (without remotely explaining abiogenesis), but evolutionary theory definitely has some evidentiary holes/problems that aren't often discussed (which explains my hesitancy to embrace either theory). Thankfully, the Church has abstained from the question, stating only that we must believe with Divine and Holy Faith that we had two first parents (and not a common group -- which makes perfect logical sense even under a Darwinian account) and that God directly imbued these parents with immortal souls (which also makes sense -- a simple spiritual substance can't "evolve").

That said, here are some talks (thanks to Phil Porvaznik) for those interested in the topic:

Karl Keating v. Bill Jackson Debate - Papacy

Karl Keating is the founder and president of Catholic Answers. He had been working as an attorney for several years when, on leaving Mass one Sunday, he found anti-Catholic tracts on the windshields of the cars in the church parking lot. He wrote his own tract in reply and distributed copies of it at the Fundamentalist church responsible for the anti-Catholic tract. That was the start of what has become the country’s largest lay-run apologetics and evangelization organization: Catholic Answers. (BTW, if you're looking for an organization to support this giving season, please prayerfully consider Catholic Answers! I support it, and I think you should, too!)

Bill Jackson is a Baptist pastor who currently lives in Vienna, Missouri, and who's biography has proved exceedingly difficult to find -- his personal faith testimony, however, is readily available. During his life he has done missionary work among Irish Catholics overseas from 1957 to 1974. He has authored a number of books, most of which are still in print.

Topic: Who is the Vicar of Christ?

Catholic Sermon Series

Here are a few talks from the Catholic Sermon Series. They're part of a series given at a mission. A reader recommended them but I haven't had a chance to listen. Let your thoughts be heard in the comment box!

UPDATE:
I just listened to the Prelude and I thought it might be worth noting that (1) this is a traditionalist talk and (2) a few things don't sound quite right. One thing would be his statement that Catholics and Muslims don't worship the same God -- there are ways this could be understood as correct, and ways that it's expressly contrary to the Church's teaching. Another would be his statement, citing St. John Vianney, that a particular species of sin confessed three times ceases to be absolved -- and that's just plain wrong. That said, there are a number of things he says (at least in the Prelude) that need saying and need to be heard; please listen.

Fr. Barron - Cardinal George

For those who aren't aware, Cardinal Francis George (of Chicago) has been elected the new President of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. To get a sense of the man, here's something I pulled down from the Chicago Archdiocese's site, created at Cardinal George's request. If you like these short clips, do check out the tag SPEAKER: Fr. Barron and Fr.'s other (longer) talks.

Cardinal George has declared 2006 the “Year of Evangelization.” Father Barron has been chosen to take the lead in this spiritual initiative. Father Barron is a nationally-renowned speaker, author and professor of theology at the University of St Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary. He is delivering a series of special Lenten Missions throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. Father Barron recorded abbreviated versions of his talks for viewing on our web site. They run about 4-minutes each and can be viewed by clicking on the links below.

Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius - Talk

From Men of Emmaus:

Fr. Avelino Gonzales came to the U.S. from Cuba as a young child with his parents. He grew up in the Washington suburbs in the post-Vatican II area. He attributes misunderstanding of Vatican II in the U.S. to a mal-formation of his (and many of his generation) Catholic faith. He was saved by the Holy Spirit, with the help of a priest. His path to a reawakening of his faith began after learning he, like most U.S. Catholics of his generation, misunderstood the Immaculate Conception, holding the common misconception that it referred to Jesus' conception.

Highlights of Fr. Gonzales. Talk

  • Self Mastery - insights into Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatious (click here for a short listen).
  • Click here to listen to the full recording of the event.
  • St. Ignatius was a Spanish soldier in the late 1500s who developed his concepts of Spiritual Exercises while recovering from a cannonball injury.
  • Fr. Avelino provided a proof of the existence of our soul via the image of a pizza (you had to be there). He talked about the three parts of soul,
    1. passion
    2. intellect
    3. will
  • He talked about the all too common occurrence of some passion overriding our intellect and subjugating our will, leading to our enslavement to our own passions (cigarette smoking being a good example).
  • He talked about our call to be prophet, priest and king, and one significant part of our kingdom being our body.
  • He talked about one key goal of the Exercises being self-mastery of our passions (freedom from passion enslavement) via our intellect, e.g., control of disordered desires and conscious acts.
  • He also pointed out that we are called to participate in the divine nature of God which is reflected in peaceful actions which are dependent on a peaceful interior state of being, another goal of the Spiritual Exercises.

What are the exercises? Ideally a 4 week program (but abbreviated versions exist):

  • Week 1 . The Purgative Way . self-examination and purging self of sin
  • Week 2 . Illuminative Way . study and learn the virtues of Christ
  • Week 3 . Walk the Path of Christ's scripture reading and contemplation on Christ's life
  • Week 4 . Unitive Way . a desire to imitate Christ

Biblical references and closing thoughts:

  • Hebrews 12: 1-2
  • Genesis 6: 5 Made in the image and likeness of God, but we need to work hard to develop the likeness. We need to fight the spiritual battle for our intellects (the suggestions of the devil vs the teachings of Christ) We are ineffective fighters of sin if we are slaves to our sinful passions.
  • Matt 20: 29-34
  • John 15: 1-5
  • Matt 13: 43

Ask of the Lord, search, read scripture; determine to be holy, fight to be holy.

Gay Marriage Debate

AUDIO: Gay Marriage Debate

UPDATE: For those interested in the topic, there's a rather salient discussion from an adamantly secular POV over on Gideon's Blog. There, the otherwise gay-friendly author brings out several points which are not addressed by either of the advocates in the above debate -- points worth considering. Here's a snippet indicator of the level of discourse:

As with everything before, the assumption that marriage is fundamentally about love (with the corollary that if love fades, presumably so should the marriage - after all, there might still be time to actualize oneself through another, yet more thrilling love!) does not originate with the campaign for gay marriage; far from it. But again, acceptance of gay marriage entails explicitly understanding marriage in this way, and therefore bars the way back to a more realistic appraisal.
It really deserves to be read in its entirety. Please do.

Pat Madrid - Search and Rescue

Here's the audio program Patrick Madrid did for EWTN based on his book "Search and Rescue":

Well-known apologist Patrick Madrid helps Catholics find ways to bring their loved-ones back to Christ and His Church through their words, prayers, and example. Drawing on the Scriptures, the lives of the saints, and common sense, he shows how evangelization is the work of every Catholic, and offers insights into how Catholics can learn to explain, defend, and share the faith intelligently and charitably.

“How do you bring a friend or relative back into the Church? First you pray. Then, you follow Patrick Madrid's advice in Search and Rescue.”

Atheism Debate

Richard Dawkins vs Alister McGrath Debate

July 4th, 2007

vs.

Richard Dawkins is a world-famous evolutionist, author of The Selfish Gene (amongst a whole host of other popular science books) and is Oxford University’s Charles Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science. His latest best-seller The God Delusion has captivated readers interested in the religion-atheism debate worldwide. His most prominent adversary is Alister McGrath. Also a fellow Oxford academic where he holds a chair in Historical Theology, McGrath holds a doctorate in molecular biophysics and has written two book-length critiques of Dawkins (Dawkins’ God: Memes, Genes and the Meaning of Life and The Dawkins Delusion). Naturally, they disagree passionately about the existence of God and religious truth. The links below are mp3 downloads of a debate between the two held in early 2007. Joan Bakewell chairs.

Part 1 of the debate (approx. 30 minutes)

Part 2 of the debate (approx. 30 minutes)

You may also be interested in a separate debate between the two men which was done for Dawkins’ 2006 Root of All Evil documentary. That interview never made it into the show. However, you can watch it here.

Atheism Debate

In my humble opinion, this is one of the better debates with Hitchens. First, it's funny. Both gentlemen get some pretty humorous jabs in at each other's position. Second, it really serves to show the vitriol of Hitchens' position - it's based less in reason than (a rather eloquent) emotivism, and that becomes fairly evident. Third, Dinesh D'Souza is a Catholic, and I'm not above a bit of tribalism. Before I post the links, here's a bit written by D'Souza just prior to the debate:

I have a mixed view of Hitchens’ arguments, but his real strength is in launching witty and pungent barbs at Christianity. Having shared the podium with him in the past, I know he’s an agile debater. But so am I, and I’m ready for this one. Perhaps one good thing that can come out of all these atheist books is that they bring God back into the mainstream of American cultural debate. It’s long overdue.

Without further ado...here's the debate:

Atheism Debate

Here's a debate between Atheist author Christopher Hitchens (yeah, the guy who thinks Mother Theresa was a horrible person) and Protestant Theist and author Alister McGrath.

Here's the run-down:

In order of their appearance, the speakers are Thomas Banchoff, director of the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs at Georgetown University; Michael Cromartie, vice president of the Ethics and Public Policy center; Christopher Hitchens, the author most recently of God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything (May 2007); and Alister McGrath, the author most recently of Christianity's Dangerous Idea: The Protestant Revolution—A History from the Sixteenth Century to the Twenty-First (September 2007).

Mini-Retreat with a Franciscan

"Poverty & Joy: The Franciscan Tradition" with Bill Short, OFM

Taking his book, Poverty & Joy: The Franciscan Tradition, as a starting point, Br. Bill Short, OFM led a Mini-Retreat for our parish on Franciscan spirituality, reflecting on such themes as the Incarnation, poverty as a way to God, suffering and healing, and creation–humanity & nature–in harmony.

Br. Bill Short, OFM is on the faculty of the Franciscan School of Theology in Berkeley. He is a scholar equally comfortable in the fields of spirituality, Christian history and the Franciscan tradition, as well as a popular leader of retreats and workshops.

PART II: Download MP3 file (104 MB) (1:53:53)

NOTE: I'm a bit leery about this talk because (1) he's from Berkley and (2) I'm completely unfamiliar with his work. If someone would please be so kind, drop a note in the comments as to whether or not this is a fine retreat for believing Catholics or if it's an engram-laden bit of hippie mush. Thanx!
