Hadley Arkes on how the defense in the courts of the "right to privacy" has transformed thinking about law and rights in American society
I am back in the podcast business, renamed from Brave New Bioethics to What It Means to be Human. After consulting with my colleagues at the Discovery Institute--which is producing the broadcast--we decided that since I am dealing with issues well beyond bioethics now, the new title was warranted.
In the first edition, I define some of the threats to human exceptionalism and argue that accepting the intrinsic value of human life simply because it is human is the necessary intellectual condition precedent (as we lawyers say) to universal human rights.

Award winning author and bioethicist, Wesley J. Smith, gives an important lecture on the value of human life and the shortcomings of many of the ethical system that are held today. The lecture was presented at Trinity Law School on March 14, 2008My pal Bill Hurlbut expounds in this radio interview on the moral responsibilities of scientists, the human future, and other matters of interest to SHSers. For example, he explains why he holds the human embryo as having intrinsic moral worth:It is a very NPRish interview--don't expect sound bites. But it is an important conversation about profound issues. Check it out.
A lot of what I was hearing [during deliberations of the President's Council on Bioethics] by way of argument [in favor of human cloning] was actually just natural moral sentiments. People were saying, "How can you count something that is no bigger than a period at the end of a sentence the equivalent of a 3-year-old?" Well, in a way we don't by nature, but we do by mind. We can recognize the continuity as a living organism. And that...was for me a very crucial connection. I realized that each one of us started in those early phases with an absolutely magnificent intrinsic power to unfold in our individual form. Each one of us is unique and an unrepeatable gift of life. And in that sense, I decided...that human embryos should have moral worth that is worthy of protection and nurture.
He Speaks! "Why Being Human Matters"
I am often asked where people can see recordings of my speeches. The Discovery Institute just posted online one I made there last year, called "Why Being Human Matters: Bioethics, Animal Liberation, and the Threat to Human Exceptionalism." Hit this link, and I will appear after a very nice introduction from Bruce Chapman, the head of the DI. In the speech I address the importance of human exceptionalism, personhood theory, animal rights, transhumanism, and the all that jazz. I only have one question: When did I get so gray?
I found this podcast today and it looks pretty interesting. I'm posting the episodes I want to listen to first, but if you want to scour the archives on your own, here's the site:An update to posts here and here, I have added audio shows 12-16 from Spirit Catholic Radio with Dr. Thomas Hilgers, founder of the Pope Paul VI Institute for The Study of Human Reproduction. A summary - Contraception increases out-of-wedlock pregnancy rates. A doctor will give the pill for menstrual cramps and in the back of the doctor’s mind he will say “and she won’t get pregnant.” Dr. Hilgers discusses the HPV vaccine. Artificial Reproduction Technology - Are we ever going to find a cure for infertility? If we continue down the artificial road we will never find a cure because it is not interested in the causes. About 6.2 million women have some type of impaired infertility. The causes of recurrent miscarriages. What is endometriosis and the treatment and causes. The pharmaceutical industry is not a friend of the NaProTechnology treatments, but some Compounding Pharmacists are interested. (Click Links to listen.)

Get the interview.I did an interview with a Catholic radio show last Friday that focused pretty hard on assisted suicide, futile care, eugenics, hospice, and bioethics. It was a call-in show and a couple of hospice nurses called offering some interesting comments. If you want to hear me spout hot air and emit particulate matter like I do in writing here, tune in to this rebroadcast.
