The proposition "We'd be better off without religion" was debated in Westminster on March 27;

Speaking for the motion: Professor Richard Dawkins, Professor A.C. Grayling and Christopher Hitchens.

Speaking against: Rabbi Julia Neuberger, Professor Roger Scruton and Nigel Spivey. The debate was chaired by Joan Bakewell

It sounds interesting, even if the bad guys won the votes (1,205 votes for the motion and 778 against it, at the final count).

Again, I exhort all of you to participate in 40 Days for Life. You don't have to give any money. You don't even have to go anywhere. Just fast and pray (or even pray fast!). Ask God to honor the prayers and fasting of His people that abortion may cease. If you're one of the on-the-fence people, pray for the post-abortion healing of the women who are traumatized by the experience, and pray that God might save women from being forced into such a decision. What's important is that you pray and fast. While a pure fast will entail consuming only water for the day, you may fast in other ways as well -- fast from your late-night snack, fast from TV, fast from the gossip columns, fast from sleeping in, fast from lunch. Pick something and sacrifice it as a part of 40 Days for Life. No matter how small, God will honor your sacrifice as a loving father honors the crayon drawings of his children. Whether you scribble or paint a masterpiece, God will look with love on your efforts. That said, try for the masterpiece.

Over at Catholic-Tube (a very well-designed site I've linked on my sidebar from the onset), Travis is hosting a new pro-life video every day for the next 40 days. Please make the time to watch a few.

Dr. Scott Hahn delves into the heart of mankind’s quest for a sense of belonging... belonging to a family. In this EWTN series, Dr. Hahn and Mike Aquilina guide us to the understanding of marriage and family as inspired, conceived and sustained by God. Joined occasionally by Kimberly Hahn, the trio shares insights into the Biblical foundation of marriage, a foundation whose design is for greatness and holiness.

True to form, in First Comes Love, Dr. Hahn dives into the Gospels to show how "family terminology", words like brother, sister, mother, father and home, dominate the words of Our Lord and the writings of His first followers. It is these words that truly illuminate the central ideas of the Catholic Faith. As you explore such concepts as the fatherhood of God, the marriage of the Church to Christ, and the all-encompassing role of the Holy Spirit, Dr. Hahn will deepen your understanding of the Sacraments and teach you how to create a family life in the image of the Trinity. In chapter after chapter he demonstrates the ways in which the analogy of the family applies to every aspect of our Catholic Faith and its many practices, from the role of "Father" embodied by the ancient Patriarchs and contemporary parish priests, to the comfort and guidance offered by our brothers and sisters who comprise the Communion of Saints, to the nurturing embrace of the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of all Christians.

This fall, 89 cities in 33 states across the nation will unite for a unique pro-life campaign called 40 Days for Life -- an intensive effort designed to raise awareness, save lives, bring healing, and prepare America for the beginning of the end of abortion.

The campaign will be conducted simultaneously in all locations from September 26 - November 4.

There are three components to 40 Days for Life...

1. Prayer and Fasting

Want to end abortion? First you pray. Prayer is at the center of 40 Days for Life. During the September 26 - November 4 campaign, we are calling on people of faith across the nation to fall on their knees before the Lord, asking Him to hear our plea and heal our land. Pray at church. Pray outside an abortion facility. Pray at work. Pray in the car. Pray at home with your family. Pray!

People of faith are also invited to fast throughout 40 Days for Life. Christ said there are some demons that can only be driven out by prayer and fasting. A fast is not a Christian diet; it is a powerful means of drawing closer to God by blocking out distractions. Fast from food. Fast from television. Fast from e-mail. Fast from apathy and indifference. Fast from whatever it is that separates you from God.

We believe that when God's people pray and fast with a broken, repentant, and contrite spirit, our heavenly Father will hear from heaven and heal our lives, our churches, our communities, our nation, and our world.

2. Peaceful Vigil

The visible, public centerpiece of 40 Days for Life is a 40-day-long prayer vigil outside a Planned Parenthood center or other abortion facility in each community.

The prayer vigil is a peaceful and educational presence that sends a powerful message to the community about the tragic reality of abortion. It also serves as a call to repentance for those who work at the abortion center and those who patronize the facility.

In many locations, the vigil will be conducted 24 hours a day for each of the 40 days.

3. Community Outreach

During 40 Days for Life, the pro-life message is proactively taken to every possible corner of a community through a focused, grassroots educational effort.

A door-to-door petition and education drive reaches out to households throughout a neighborhood or city. Informational flyers raise awareness about the local crisis of abortion. Citizens are invited to sign a petition of support for the sanctity of human life, and people are given the opportunity to visibly show their support for 40 Days for Life.

Additional outreach activities can include church involvement, media contact, and campus outreach.

Jim Shoulak has been playing guitar for over 25 years and has recorded two other albums. He has performed at all sorts of functions and loves sharing his gifts of song and storytelling with any audience - even if it’s just one other person.

I'm A Catholic! - There have been times in my life when I didn't stand up for and defend my faith. Maybe it was a joke someone told that was improper, or a misconception re-told as if it were the truth about Catholicism, or maybe it was a criticism about the Church that was unfair. In any case, in 1994, I decided to write down all the things I cherish about my Catholic faith and put them into a song. I figured: at least when I sing the song, I'll be letting my feelings known! ...And maybe the Church needs a "pep rally" type of song sometimes...

Sister Mary Boniface - I always had a good relationship with nuns. From grade school to high school to college and beyond, I've admired these dedicated women. This story is based on some wonderful Sisters of St. Agnes I recall from my childhood. (There was no woman named Sr. Mary Boniface in my life. The fictitious sister in this story was named after St. Boniface Catholic church in Manitowoc, Wis., where my ancestors attended so many baptisms, First Communions, graduations, weddings and funerals.)

Bless Me, Father - The Sacrament of Reconciliation is so important to me. It's a time to re-examine my life and often, get pointed in a better direction. When I receive absolution, I feel a sort of "re-baptism," the wonderful feeling of being washed clean. This is one of the most autobiographical songs on the album. I dedicate this song to all inactive Catholics, and those Catholics who have chosen to worship elsewhere. I pray God will ease the hurt and pain you feel, and heal the division(s) which separate us. I hope for your reconciliation with the Church someday.

Holy Is His Name (Mary's Waltz) - Written on a youth retreat in 1984, it's one of the few instances in my life when the words and music for a song arrived in my head at the same time. From the start, the lyrics and melody seemed inseparable. This version is a re-arrangement of the 1995 release of "Holy Is His Name." In this re-working, I was looking for a waltz feel, thinking that Mary's joy must have made her dance around the house, after being visited by an angel and having been asked to be the Mother of God's Son.

I'm sure most of you remember the idiocy surrounding the Pope's speech at the University of Regensberg a little over a year ago -- protests, riots, violence, calls for beheading, burnings in effigy, etc. (which is so ironic that I actually hurt when learning of it).

Here's a snippet from the Wikipedia article on the topic:

The lecture on "faith and reason", with references ranging from ancient Jewish and Greek thinking to Protestant theology and modern Secularity, focused mainly on Christianity and what Pope Benedict called the tendency to "exclude the question of God" from reason. Islam features in a part of the lecture: the Pope quoted strong criticism of Islam, which he described as being of a "startling brusqueness, a brusqueness which leaves us astounded".

In three paragraphs at the beginning of the speech, Pope Benedict quoted from and discussed an argument made by the Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos in a 1391 dialogue with an "educated Persian" (who remained unnamed in the Pope's lecture), as well as observations on this argument made by Theodore Khoury, the scholar whose edition of Manuel II's dialogues the Pontiff was referencing. Pope Benedict used Manuel II's argument in order to draw a distinction between the Christian view, as expressed by Manuel II, that "not acting reasonably is contrary to God's nature", and an Islamic view, as explained by Khoury, that God transcends concepts such as rationality, and his will, as Ibn Hazm stated, is not constrained by any principle, including rationality.

If you never had the opportunity or time to read it, here's an audio recording of the English translation:

Chesterton has been called the "prince of paradox." He wrote in an off-hand, whimsical prose studded with startling formulations. For example: "Thieves respect property. They merely wish the property to become their property that they may more perfectly respect it." He is one of the few Christian thinkers who are equally admired and quoted by both liberal and conservative Christians, and indeed by many non-Christians. Chesterton's own theological and political views were far too nuanced to fit comfortably under the "liberal" or "conservative" banner. And in his own words he cast aspersions on the labels saying, "The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected." He routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox Christian," and came to identify such a position with Roman Catholicism more and more, eventually converting to the Church of Rome.
